In my work as a psychologist i meet people who struggle. I love my work. Not because of the suffering I meet, but because of the courage of those who struggle. It is truly honoring to be a part of their way back to recovery. We all struggle really. It does not matter who you are, how much money or power you have, some day you will face suffering. Your friends, family or yourself will eventually die. When facing life difficulties it is essential how you cope with it. Learning to take care of yourself is not selfish, it is wise.
As a lecturer I try to teach the students who will be the next generation of psychologists this amazing profession. In the open networked learning course I am part of now, I meet people from all over the world. Learning new digital tools helps us lecturers spreading knowledge outside the classroom to those who may not be part of a university. This is very inspiring.
Media delivers a dark picture of reality. I think we need to hear more about courageous acts, people taking responsibility of themselves and others. There are as many stories of love as there are stories about misery. This does not mean that we should not take action when necessary, to help those in need. But I think that just listening to suffering at the news does not help us to take action. Quite the opposite actually. It might make you feel small, helpless and lonely.
But you are not alone. We are all part of a big community. Together we can make a difference. You can start today. Just a little act of compassion will do. A small act of love for yourself or someone you meet.
In his radioshow ”Sommar i P1” Alexander Bard (1) told us listeners that we now live in a digital world. Life itself, communication and relations are on the internet. Listening to these comments made me feel like a digital fossil, being part of an ancient time and not being part of this new world. However I am very interested in taking part of online relations, meeting and communicating with new people all round the world. But I need a step by step learning process.
Young people of today, at least in Sweden and many other western countries, are used to internet and digital tools from a very early age. As David White (2) speaks about in his very educational serie on YOUTUBE, children are like native speaking in the digital world. Even if the rest of us will not be able to use the tools as fluently as young people are, there is still hope for us digital fossils to jump on the online learning train 🙂

Welcome to my very first blog.
I have chosen to call it for ”omtanke”, a Swedish word that I think captures a lot of the meaning of the english word compassion. The field of Compassion is my great interest. I work as a psychologist and as a teacher of psychology at Linneaus University in Växjö. I am specialized in a method called Compassion Focused Therapy. The goal of this treatment is to learn to be more kind and caring of oneself and others. Being more compassionate of oneself and others make you feel better, happier and you get a balance between activity and peace. I am very compassionate of this method 🙂
As part of my own learning, I have joined a course called Open Network Learning. One of the first tasks of this course is to start a blog. On this page I will be able to share my thoughts and learning experiences among other things.
